MUNDIAL de CONFEPASO
2009 Mundial Grand Championship
Fino Stallion Class
The Broodmare Group Class (Lote de Yeguas para Crias) has three horses over 40 months old of similar or same type movement , belonging to the same owner. They are shown under halter, without riders. Judges may request the rider to mount. The purpose of this class is to judge reproductive ability or quality.
GROUP OF MARES AND FOALS' Class ((Late de Yeguas con Crias), contain two mares that are older than 48 months and their offspring, all under the same owner.
BELLA FORMA Class, meaning beautiful form, is where the horses are judged on their phenotype, holding to a standard for the Paso Fino horse. The considerations are the head, neck, body, legs and combined physical proportions in totality. The Bella Forma class does not require riding. Any horse that places in this class, operative word being "place," MUST compete in a later "mounted" or "ridden" event, and within the same classification of course. Again, the stipulation to this mounted event is, any horse and rider placing 1st and 2nd, MUST further compete in the Grand Championship Class within their division. If they do not, they are subject to disciplinary action. Grand Champions and Reserve Grand Champions are chosen from among the two top winners in each of the five age divisions for each modality; in other words, first and second place winners, respectively.
PASO FINO CLASS, WHICH ARE THE CLASSIC FINOS - These paso finos must demonstrate the classic "Fino" or "Paso Fino" gait or modality, which is, in it's best form, an evenly-space, four-beat, lateral gait! Lateral, meaning one side or same side. Paso finos gait left rear, left front and then right rear and right front, or vice-versa…..which side, doesn't matter, but that's technically what the word "lateral" means - same side! The faster this gait, the better. It is a faster gait (more revolutions per strides combined) than the "Corto' gait demonstrated in Paso Performance and Paso Pleasure, but less ground-covering.
PASO PERFORMANCE - The paso fino must demonstrate gait in three speeds or variants: The WALK (Paseo in espanol), CORTO and LARGO. Technically by international standards it's referred to as the "Paso Corto" and the "Paso Largo." I think the Walk should also be referred to as the "Paso Walk," because most Paso Finos, especially the show quality caliber of these classes or modalities, the Paso Fino has it's own very unique walk, usually with a lightness, quickness and unique style of execution in his step. The PASEO OR WALK in this Division, Performance, should be collected with four evenly spaced lateral beats. It should be rhythmic, with animation and brio. This should be strengthened and intensified at the CORTO, showing more collection and animation with brio. The LARGO GAIT in Performance should be performed with less collection (less rein), for greater speed and more leg extension than in the CORTO. If you hold a horse in with collection like in the Corto, then he can't move out at a greater stride and therefore a greater speed. A greater speed for more covering of ground requires extension, which requires giving the horse more of his head (less collection) so he can "stretch out," but still maintain his evenly-spaced four beat gait..
PASO PLEASURE - This includes the same three gaits as PASO PERFORMANCE, but with less Collection, a more relaxed rein, but still with accordant animation and brio, for these are the characteristics of the Paso Fino Horse.

(Confederacion Internacional de Caballos de Paso) Mundial is a biennial World Cup Paso Fino event. It is THE event of the Paso Fino Horse worldwide. The countries represented are Colombia, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Germany, Panama, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, the United States and Venezuela. Hope I haven't left anyone out. CONFEPASO is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1990 to promote the paso fino and to unite the paso fino organizations/associations worldwide for competition, evaluation, and judging under a unified standard. The Mundial is judged under the rules and competition bylaws of CONFEPASO, not the host country's association showing guidelines, which dramatically alters the bar for competition. The very first Mundial compeition was held in 1993 in the Dominican Republic, commemorating the 500-year anniversary of the arrival of the ancestry of the Paso Fino Horse in the "New World." The location for the event is rotated every two years among the CONFEPASO member-host countries. This year, 2009, November, it was held in Colombia, South America.
