ORIGINAL SHOWS - In the Beginning
The annual National Show began in 1969 before PFHA (Paso Fino Horse Association) was formed or PFOBA (Paso Fino Owners & Breeders Association) was formed in 1973. PFOBA was a split off from APFHA (American Paso Fino Horse Association), the "original" original, which is still in existence with it's own registry.
The first few years of shows, probably until the late 70's, early 80's, were pretty small. In the beginning they consisted of 20 plus classes and took only one day. This is quite a change from the week-long National Show that PFHA puts on today. They reportedly did not take more than one day until the late 70's, early 80's, a reflection of the size of the paso fino breed in the beginning, small by comparison…. in the 100's as opposed to the many thousands of paso finos today in the USA. In 1973, in the transition period, there were two National Shows, one for APFHA, and one for PFOBA. This puts many things into perspective when judged within the context of the number of Paso Finos then in existence in the USA. The Foundation horses, winners were named within the context of a very few Paso Finos numbering only in the 100s, and should be compared only within that context of the Paso Finos in existence in that day, and not compared within the context of the 10's of thousands of Paso Finos in existence today, which have had much greater influence on the modern-day Paso Fino. The Foundation horses did start the breed, as it has to start somewhere, and that should not be taken away from the, but should be viewed within the proper framework of time, history and numbers. The breed has much improved as time and better quality Paso Finos were imported and bred in the USA, as well as the other principal participant countries. The Foundation line of horses chosen in the early 1970's do not represent and influence the whole of the Paso Fino breed today, as it has grown beyond those parameters, as well it should in order to flourish.
In 1969, the only classes with participants were the following. This is under APFHA. Both Bolero LaCE and Mar de Plata LaCE ended up being Foundation Stallions under PFHA:
